The 40 S&W and 9mm are two extremely potent self-defense pistol calibers that will satisfy the needs of almost any concealed carry permit holder. The 40 S&W offers increased stopping power as it fires a larger, heavier bullet with only minimal loss to magazine capacity.
The biggest difference comes from barrier penetration. 40 S&W, when loaded with a defensive load, penetrates barriers better than 45 ACP and 9mm. The round is less likely to be deflected when penetrating a hard barrier and this could be a concern for law enforcement and military applications.
Then comes the venerable .40 S&W, which was designed to be the official round of the FBI, but ended up being a popular self defense and bear defense round. This comparison will weigh the features, pros and cons of both these cartridges.
