The 9 mm bullets have weights in the range of 115 to 147 grains, whereas the .40 S&W fields bullet weights between 135 and 180 grains. This corroborates that extra case capacity to hold more powder for the .40 S&W rounds. The .40 S&W has been designed to deliver less recoil than its 10 mm and .45 ACP counterparts.
