In addition to teaching that abortion is immoral, the Catholic Church also generally makes public statements and takes actions in opposition to its legality. Many, and in some Western countries most, Catholics hold views on abortion that differ from the official position of the Catholic Church.
Given the scientific fact that a human life begins at conception, the only moral norm needed to understand the Church's opposition to abortion is the principle that each and every human life has inherent dignity, and thus must be treated with the respect due to a human person.
From time to time we hear it suggested, even at times by Catholic politicians and academics, that Catholic teaching on abortion is unclear.
