Common snail and slug species found in nurseries include the brown garden snail (Cornu aspersum, formerly Helix aspersa), amber snail (Succinea spp.), gray garden slug (Deroceras reticulatum, formerly Agriolimax meticulatus), banded slug (Lehmannia poirieri) and the greenhouse slug (Milax gagates).
Snails and slugs are among the most destructive pests found in gardens and landscapes. The brown garden snail, Cornu aspersum (formerly Helix aspersa), is the most common snail causing problems in California gardens. It was introduced from France during the 1850s for use as food.

The garden slug is larger than the gray garden slug. It measures about 1 to 1.5 inch in length and is gray to dark brown. Living for about one year, the garden slug is sexually mature in about 3 weeks. This slug is sensitive to cold and many will not survive a cold winter.
