Key points. – The elderly population is at an increased risk for acquiring CAP and is more likely to suffer from severe disease. – In the coming years, rates of CAP in older adults will rise due to the overall increase in the elderly population. – CAP in elderly patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality.
Data continue to show that a high index of suspicion, early antimicrobial therapy and appropriate medications to cover typical pathogens are extremely important in treating community-acquired pneumonia in older individuals.
