People who have community-acquired pneumonia usually can be treated at home with medication. Although most symptoms ease in a few days or weeks, the feeling of tiredness can persist for a month or more.

Appropriate diagnosis and early initiation of adequate antimicrobial treatment for severe pneumonia are crucial in improving survival among critically ill patients.

Pneumonia may be classified as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) or nosocomial pneumonia and, within the latter, as hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) or ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).
