They're showing up with new kernels as you correctly observed because new kernels have new functions that aren't supported by older and even many brand new firmwares. A future firmware update may or may not no longer show them or show different ones instead. In a nutshell, don't stress.

I had the same error with Linux Mint 19, my OS worked fine and suddenly Linux booted right into emergency mode with your error. This thread led me to checking my /etc/fstab which I had previously edited to add an external hard drive. After removing my own edits there it booted normally.
