- Chapter 22) 8. Structure of a Sperm Cell Flashcards | Quizlet
An acrosome is a small protrusion that contains enzymes at the head of a sperm that functions to aid the sperm cell in penetrating the egg.
Study with Quizlet and memorise flashcards containing terms like What components make up the sperm head?, How is the nucleus of the sperm head shaped? Why is it shaped this way?, Acrosome and others.
The acrosome is one of the main components of a sperm cell overlying the nucleus. It's located on the anterior part of the sperm head where it serves a number of important roles related to fertilization.
A structure called the acrosome covers most of the head of the sperm cell as a “cap” that is filled with lysosomal enzymes important for preparing sperm to participate in fertilization. Tightly packed mitochondria fill the mid- piece of the sperm.
15 Απρ 2024 · Sperm cells have specialized structures and enzymes within the acrosome which covers the head of the sperm. The acrosome contains enzymes that help in penetrating the protective layers of the egg. Once the sperm reaches the egg, these enzymes are released in a process called the acrosome reaction.
15 Μαΐ 2021 · Sperm cell function is singular – to fertilize a female egg and produce the next generation of a species, so passing on the male’s genome. This single function is made clear in the third phase of spermatogenesis where all unnecessary organelles disintegrate.
