He began his professional career as a dancer of classical ballet and contemporary ballet and is a former Principal of the Royal Ballet, a major international ballet company based in London.
In 1989 he joined the ensemble of the Royal Ballet as a classical dancer, rising to soloist in 1994 and appearing in choreographies created by Kenneth MacMillan, George Balanchine, Michel Fokine, Bronislawa Nijinska, Mikhail Baryshnikov, William Forsythe and others.
Since winning the Ursula Moreton Choreographic Competition, Cooper has recently returned to choreography. He has created Six Faces for K Ballet, Just Scratchin' the Surface for Scottish Ballet and Elegy for Two and Reflections for Images of Dance.
