Introduction. The area that is now Greece was home to the first civilizations in Europe. Ancient Greece had powerful cities, great thinkers called philosophers, and fine art. The idea of democracy —rule by the people—also came from ancient Greece. Aegean Civilizations. Greek civilization began sometime after 3000 bce on the island of Crete.
Ancient Greek civilization—“the glory that was Greece,” in the words of Edgar Allan Poe —was short-lived and confined to a very small geographic area. Yet it has influenced the growth of Western civilization far out of proportion to its size and duration.
17 Ιαν 2024 · Timeline [edit | edit source] The history of Greece went through these stages: Mycenaean culture (c.1600–c.1100 BC) was an early Greek culture during the Bronze Age, on the Greek mainland and on Crete. Greek Dark Ages or Bronze Age collapse (c.1100–c.750 BC). The Archaic period (ca. 750-c.500 BC).

Athens is named after the Greek goddess Athena. She was the goddess of wisdom, war, and civilization and the patron of the city of Athens. Her shrine, the Parthenon, sits on top of a hill in the center of the city. The agora was the center of commerce and government for ancient Athens.
When we think of Ancient Greece, we usually think of the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Periods. However, to understand this powerful civilization, it’s helpful to learn about the other periods too. Let’s look at some of the major events of each period in Ancient Greek history.
