All types of matter can cause friction, even air! Air resistance is a form of friction that slows down cars, trains, and airplanes. Scientists design their shape to reduce friction from the air.
Free teacher resource exploring the effects of friction, including air and water resistance and investigate how friction slows or stops moving objects.
Friction is just that simple. You will find friction everywhere that objects come into contact with each other. The force acts in the opposite direction to the way an object wants to slide. If a car needs to stop at a stop sign, it slows because of the friction between the brakes and the wheels.
However, when the road is icy, the friction between the two surfaces decreases, allowing the car to slip—rather than grip. You can replicate these situations much more safely at home using some common objects—regardless of the weather.
