The primary movement disorders from antipsychotic agents are akathisia, acute dystonia, pseudoparkinsonism, and tardive dyskinesia. Akathisia may also rarely occur with antidepressant agents.
Background: Akathisia is a common and distressing neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with antipsychotic medication, characterised by subjective and objective psychomotor restlessness. The goal of this guideline is to provide clinicians with recommendations on the assessment and treatment of akathisia.
Some studies have shown that the following medications may help treat akathisia: Beta-blockers, such as propranolol. Benzodiazepines (a class of drugs commonly used to treat conditions such as anxiety, insomnia and seizures). Low-dose mirtazapine (an antidepressant). Anticholinergics (medications commonly used to treat asthma and other conditions).
Akathisia is primarily caused by prescribed medications. The most frequent offenders are antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-nausea medications, and antibiotics, but it can be caused by many other medications as well.
