It serves as the focal point (Qibla) for Muslims around the world during their daily prayers (salah) and during Tawaf, whether performing Hajj or Umrah. Also known as the House of Allah (Baytullah), the Kaaba occupies a central position beneath the corresponding “Oft-Visited House” (al-Bayt al-Ma’mur) in Heaven.
During his time in Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to pray towards Bayt-al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), with the Ka’bah in front of him. When he (ﷺ) migrated to Madinah, he prayed towards Jerusalem for 16 months, but he hoped it would be changed to the Ka’bah.
It is also known as the Grand Mosque and the Great Mosque. Every year, thousands of Muslims gather in Masjid Al-Haram to pray (Salah) and perform Tawaf during Hajj and Umrah. The world’s greatest mosque is never empty, and every sight of it is spellbinding.
