22 Ιουν 2013 · As I was researching I realized that the word for day in (Genesis 1:5, 5:5, etc…) in the Hebrew was “yowm” (meaning 24 hours). Should we not take that literally? If not, why not? And how are we to understand Exodus 20:9-11 which speaks of working 6 days and resting on the seventh (yowm).
In Genesis 1:5, yom obviously means a regular day. Evening and morning is used, as well as a number. Now if you look at Exodus 20:9-10 it says "6 days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yhwh your God".
18 Σεπ 2015 · Can "Yom" in Gen 1 be translated "aeon" meaning "an age". The short answer is "not quite". יוֹם (yôm) can refer to some unspecified period of time, as in "the of the LORD" (as e.g. in ), but that is usually regarded as quite a specialized meaning.

I previously wrote that the Hebrew word yom in Genesis 1, literally means a 24-hour Day, as supported by: (1) Yom's Sabbath Day usage in Exodus 20:9-11 (cf. Gen. 1:1-2:3). (2) Yom's appearance with the defining phrase, "morning and evening" (Gen. 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31).
1 Ιαν 2016 · Regarding the word ‘ yôm ’ in Gen. 1:1–2:4, it is apparent that there are three different uses of the term in the passage. In 1:5a it denotes ‘daylight’ as opposed to ‘night’. In 1:5b it denotes the combination of the two.
