Schools can overcome these challenges by maintaining a single, stock albuterol inhaler (stock inhaler) for use among multiple students via disposable holding chambers. Stock inhalers relieve symptoms and allow students to return to class; they may also reduce 911 calls and ambulance transports. 6
The Stock Inhaler for Schools Program provides schools with the necessary tools to ensure all students have access to emergency albuterol sulfate at school. Schools receive one (1) albuterol inhaler and (10) Thayer LiteAire® valved-holding chambers (spacers).

This toolkit is designed to provide participating schools or school districts with guidelines to implement Illinois’ stock albuterol policy (Public Act 100-0726), focusing on medication storage, training guidelines/requirements, symptom recognition and emergency response protocols.
Rood and colleagues report outcomes of House Bill 1188 that enabled use of stock albuterol in Missouri schools . Within a year of passage, 48% of students had access to a stock inhaler, and 56% of school nurses reporting using it at least once.
