Monarchs are the most celebrated and well-known butterflies in North America. They are familiar residents of Alabama and occur in every county. Yet, because of their migratory patterns, most Alabamians encounter them only in spring and fall when they pass through the state on the way to and from their wintering grounds.
Monarchs are easily the most recognized butterfly in Alabama! They are famous for their color pattern and migration. Look for Monarchs anywhere there is milkweed, which is the only food source their caterpillars eat. Most people are familiar with the declining population of Monarchs.

12 Φεβ 2024 · The Monarch is likely the most well-known butterfly in the United States due to its easily recognizable orange pattern that looks like stained glass and its habit of migration. Besides the stained glass look, you’ll see black veins and white spots on the wings of this butterfly.
The Monarch is perhaps the most recognizable butterfly in North America, known for its spectacular long distance migrations. In Alabama, Monarchs can be found from spring through fall in open fields, meadows, gardens, and anywhere milkweed grows.
The eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) and monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) are Alabama’s state butterflies. Species from all the six butterfly family that flutter here are listed below.
