Skin biopsies are often needed to confirm bacterial and parasitic causes of hair loss or to identify inflammatory or cancerous causes of hair loss. If your veterinarian suspects a hormonal problem, he or she may order testing of blood and urine samples.
Initial clinical signs: coat becomes dry and brittle with loss of primary hairs leaving a "puppy-like" coat; dark hairs lighten; alopecia develops around the collar, flanks, perineum and caudomedial thighs.
There is a progressive loss of primary and later secondary hair until complete alopecia, starting on the neck, perineum or caudal thighs and progressing to complete alopecia of the trunk, excluding the head and limbs. Diagnosis is based on a compatible biopsy together with tests that rule out endocrine disease.
Onset age: Hair loss in dogs with strongly diluted hairs starts as early as six months of age. Alopecia in weakly diluted dogs starts at two to three years old. What is Color Dilution Alopecia? Color dilution alopecia (CDA) is an inherited skin condition, and is more common in dogs that have been bred for a diluted coat color. For adult dogs with the inherited gene, it is also considered a form of follicular dysplasia. It is more commonly found in dogs with a fawn or blue coat.
