The collection includes 4 x 5 photos of the construction of the Alaska Highway (the ALCAN), the opening of the highway and dedication. Includes images of riverboats, rafts, railroads, military truck convoys, bridges, equipment, camp life, military personnel, businesses and views of Fairbanks, Dawson Creek, B.C., and Yukon Territory.
The Alaska Highway (French: Route de l'Alaska; also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II to connect the contiguous United States to Alaska across Canada.
Signs in the photos indicate they were taken by a U.S. Soldier associated with construction of the Alcan Highway through Canada to Alaska, likely on the 360-mile portion of the road from Fort St. John to Fort Nelson in British Columbia.
