tl;dr using NPV analysis, assuming steady demand for acid vials at half retail price and an adjusted 5% per tenday interest rate based on Waterdeep Dragon Heist gives a price of 15000 GP for an Alchemy Jug. Even a low valuation for this item based on selling acid vials should be at least 5000 GP.

Each alchemy jug can provide 8 gallons of water per day- assuming a half gallon of water per person per day, that means each jug provides for 16 crewmen. A 17th century ship of the line could have crews of 6-8 hundred people, meaning at most 50 jugs, at a cost of approximately 17,500 gp for a large ship.
So I know this kinda stuff is really DM's Choice, but I'm wondering how others would generally define the specific usage mechanics of the Alchemy Jug. My main questions are: Do you need to be holding/touching the jug when you "name a liquid", or can it be held by someone else or placed on a table?
