The likelihood of excessive drinking declined over the 20-year interval as adults matured into their 70s and 80s. However, at ages 75–85, 27% of women and 49% of men consumed more than 2 drinks per day or 7 drinks per week.
Ascites can be graded as follows: Grade 1 (mild). Ascites is only detectable by ultrasound examination. Grade 2 (moderate). Ascites causing moderate symmetrical distension of the abdomen. Grade 3 (large). Ascites causing marked abdominal distension. Refractory ascites.
Among older women, the prevalence of alcohol misuse ranged from less than 1 percent to 8 percent in these studies. As the population age 60 and older increases, so too could the rate of alcohol problems in this age group.
