Results: The cumulative incidence of ascites was 5.1%, 9.5%, and 10.7% and 1,3, and 5 years overall. The corresponding data for ascites requiring paracentesis were 1%, 2.1%, and 2.4%. Persons aged <65 years, with alcohol-related cirrhosis, varices, or HE are most likely to develop ascites.

The likelihood of excessive drinking declined over the 20-year interval as adults matured into their 70s and 80s. However, at ages 75–85, 27% of women and 49% of men consumed more than 2 drinks per day or 7 drinks per week.

With the “baby boom” population getting older, and the percentage of Americans over age 65 set to nearly double by 2050, alcoholism in the elderly is an issue that will likely become more and more important.
