Alice Walker was born in Putnam County, Georgia on February 9th, 1944. One of eight children, Walker was the daughter of a sharecropper and a maid. Growing up in the southern U.S. in the mid-20th century, Walker was subject to racial inequality and struggled to be allowed to stay in school.
