For the novel The Color Purple (1982), she became the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
The book, a collection of short pieces, focused on black women as they relate to other black women, the black community, and themselves (White 373). The titular essay further advances the study of black women’s literary theory, much as her Wellesley course did (White 373–78).

Walker's works are known for their portrayals of the Black woman's life. She depicts vividly the sexism, racism, and poverty that often make that life a struggle. But she also portrays, as part of that life, the strengths of family, community, self-worth, and spirituality.
Alice Walker’s intense love for writing and poetry, along with her passion to establish equality for African-Americans, especially black women, provided her literary efforts a unique identity. Her indifferent writing approach allows her creativity to shine in full swing.
Walker has also published several short story collections and poetry and released new novels as recently as 2013. Walker's writing focus heavily on themes of sexism and racism and specifically on the lives of black women in America.
