The Balsam fir is a medium-sized evergreen coniferous tree, donning its ¾ to 1 inch (19 to 25.4 mm) long needles year-round. The mature tree has a narrow conical shape. At maturity, this tree grows to a height of 45 to 65 feet (14 to 20 m) with a spread of 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.6 m).
Abies balsamea. The Balsam Fir is an extremely popular choice for both personal and commercial Christmas tree production. This conifer has shiny soft green needles and shears very nicely. The Balsam Fir is a favorite for wreath makers, who love to use the fragrant green boughs in their work.
This evergreen tree has flat, dark green needles with a strong balsam scent. Balsam fir makes a striking figure in the landscape with its narrowly-pyramidal shape, but it does best in cooler northern climates.
Also known as ‘Alpine Fir,’ though its range is actually quite wide — found in lower elevations to near-alpine, in drier areas both sides of the Cascades — and so is often used in large rock garden plantings. In the wild it can reach 100 feet. In a garden setting it stays closer to forty feet.
