Abies balsamea, commonly known as Balsam Fir, is a small to medium-size evergreen tree that grows up to 75 ft tall, with a narrow conic crown. Its needles are very aromatic and have a symmetrical, cone-shaped habit, especially when young.

In Wisconsin, Balsam Fir grows readily above the tension zone in the state’s northern half.
Growth models predict an increase in volume through 2044. Balsam fir, located mostly in northern Wisconsin, is not a major timber producing species. It is used mainly for pulpwood and Christmas trees. Wood density is very low and may not be a major source of biofuel.
