2 Σεπ 2024 · Located on the Illinois-side of the city in a community known as Alorton, the aluminum plant constructed the railroad to a connection with the St. Louis & Belleville Electric Railway located to the east, which would provide it with direct interchange to bypass the Southern.
The National Museum of Transportation is located in southwestern St. Louis near the suburb of Kirkwood. The museum was founded in 1944. The museum has on display the largest collection of steam locomotives in the United States.

In the 1940s, Alton & Southern proclaimed itself as “the biggest little railroad in America,” after the A&S had become the dominant carrier of a group of five railroads owned by Alcoa.
