The Amazon river dolphin is the largest species of river dolphin, with adult males reaching 185 kilograms (408 lb) in weight, and 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) in length. Adults acquire a pink color, more prominent in males, giving it its nickname "pink river dolphin".
The Amazon river dolphin, also known as the pink river dolphin or boto, lives only in freshwater. It is found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela.

Even more so, Bolivia has its very own river dolphin endemic species: the Bolivian pink river dolphin (Inia boliviensis). This Bolivian endemic species was discovered in 1832 by French researcher Alcide d’Orbigny and it is locally known as “bufeo”.
There is a bit of confusion as to whether the river dolphins in the Amazon are all the same species or not, but regardless, the one known primarily as the Amazon river dolphin is the largest. Also called botos or bufeo, these are well known by locals for being not only pink, but also magic.
In the Amazon River, pink dolphins can grow to a length of 9.2 feet (2.8 meters) and a weight of up to 352 pounds (166 kg), making them one of the largest freshwater dolphins in existence. As they age, they become more pink, with some even turning bright pink when excited.
