10 Νοε 2021 · A tree disease first spotted 9 years ago in Ohio is now a leading threat to one of eastern North America’s most important trees. The poorly understood malady, called beech leaf disease, is spreading rapidly and killing both mature American beeches and saplings, new research shows.

Pathogen. The foliar nematode Litylenchus crenatae ssp. mcannii (Lcm) is responsible for beech leaf disease (Carta et al. 2020) and is believed to be non-native in North America. Presently, it's suspected (but lacking confirmation) that the nematode is native to Japan.

BLD was first documented in 2012 after it was discovered affecting leaves of American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) trees in Lake County in northeastern Ohio. Since then, it has spread to nine states throughout the northeast, the mid-Atlantic, and the Canadian province of Ontario.
