The IPA pronunciation guide is a standardized system of symbols used to represent how words in the English language are pronounced.
Throughout Wikipedia, the pronunciation of words is indicated by means of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The following tables list the IPA symbols used for English words and pronunciations. Please note that several of these symbols are used in ways that are specific to Wikipedia and differ from those used by dictionaries.
On this page, you will find charts with all American English consonant and vowel sounds. You can choose one of the two phonetic transcription systems - both use the symbols of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA): Broad, or phonemic, transcription, for example, /ˈwɔtɚ/ Narrow transcription, for example, [ˈwɔɾɚ]
