2 Σεπ 2024 · The Indiana & Ohio Railway (reporting marks, IORY) is a short line based out of Cincinnati, Ohio that currently operates some 543 miles of track (Indiana - 10 miles, Michigan - 21 miles, and Ohio - 512 miles) making it one of Genesee & Wyoming's largest such properties.

10 Σεπ 2024 · A very high concentration of standard steam railroads, which blanketed and crisscrossed the state. Close proximity to notable car builders like the Niles Car & Manufacturing, Jewett Car Company, Barney & Smith, and G.C. Kuhlman. By 1908, Ohio's interurban network reached its zenith.
15 Μαρ 2021 · According to the Electric Railway Journal, in 1909 the Ohio Electric Railway was the biggest interurban system in the world, comprising 617 miles of track, most of which was on private right-of-way. The line ran from Cincinnati to Toledo and connected Ohio interurbans to Indiana lines.
28 Σεπ 2013 · According to Electric Railroads of Indiana (Hoosier Heritage Press, 1980) by Jerry Marlette, a total of 111 different interurban companies operated more than 3,000 cars in the Hoosier state during the interurban era. Only Ohio had more miles of interurban lines than Indiana's 2,100 miles under wire. Vestiges of the interurbans do still remain.
Except for the “limiteds,” interurbans made all stops en route, including the country road crossings, and from the late 1920s most trains made all stops. Road names such as Stop 10 and Stop 11 in southern Marion County are present-day reminders of this bygone form of transportation.
