- Cannelton Hydro Plant
The facility is located on the Ohio River near Hawesville, Kentucky. The Cannelton Hydroelectric Plant diverts water from the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cannelton Dam through bulb turbines anticipated to generate an average annual output of approximately 458 million kilowatt-hours (kWh).
power generation came to a head in 1957 when Unit 6 began operation at the coal-fired Philo Plant in Ohio. This steam-electric generating unit operated with steam at a pressure and temperature significantly higher than any other utility power plant in the world at the time. Philo 6 achieved major improve-
The Meldahl hydroelectric facility is a 105 MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric power plant providing renewable generation to the region. Located in Foster, Kentucky, the facility is the largest hydroelectric power plant on the Ohio River.
AMP is constructing the largest new hydroelectric generation deployment of its kind today. That run-of-the-river deployment – comprising the Cannelton, Meldahl, Smithland and Willow Island hydro projects on the Ohio River – totals more than 300 megawatts (MW) of power.
APES Unit 6 Progress Check: FRQ. -Hydroelectric power plants use renewable energy, making them more sustainable than coal-fired power plants. -There are no/fewer air pollutants (such as CO2 ) generated from hydroelectric power.
Philo Unit 6 was the world's first supercritical-pressure steam-electric generating unit to operate commercially. The mechanical engineering innovations represented by Philo 6 significantly advanced the thermal efficiency of power generation, thereby greatly reducing its production cost.
