Hand Anatomy. The human hand is made up of the wrist, palm, and fingers and consists of 27 bones, 27 joints, 34 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons, and many blood vessels and nerves. The hands enable us to perform many of our daily activities such as driving, writing and cooking.
To begin looking at the bones and joints of the hand, let's see what they’re called. Here are the eight carpal bones, and here are the five metacarpals. Each finger has a proximal phalanx, a middle phalanx, and a distal phalanx.
We’ll then look between these various bones to name some important articulations that are found in the hand. At the end of the video, we’ll use what we learn and apply it to a relevant clinical scenario that relates to the bones of the wrist and hand .

While intrinsic hand muscles of hand anatomy play a role, forearm muscles also send tendons through the wrist, allowing for a wide range of movements.
These bones, along with the muscles and ligaments in the region, give structure to the human hand and allow for all the movement and dexterity of the hands and fingers. There are three major types of bones in hand, based on their location and purpose.
