The neck has superficial fascia which is just beneath the skin, and deep fascia which is deeper, and surrounds muscles and neck structures, organizing them into compartments. The spaces of the neck are the areas where the fascia is thin and flexible.

Anatomical hierarchy. In each intercostal space, the thoracic fascia, thin but firm layers of fascia, covers the outer surface of the Intercostalis externus and the inner surface of the Intercostalis internus; and a third, more delicate layer, is interposed between the two planes of muscular fibers.
