Ancient Greek funerary practices are attested widely in literature, the archaeological record, and in ancient Greek art. Finds associated with burials are an important source for ancient Greek culture, though Greek funerals are not as well documented as those of the ancient Romans. [1]
Just like all other human cultures, the ancient Greeks had to confront the reality of death. To many, it was a mysterious threshold that was both feared and revered. As a result, funerals became an important ceremony that were believed to be vital in guiding the deceased to the afterlife.
Relatives of the deceased, primarily women, conducted the elaborate burial rituals that were customarily of three parts: the prothesis (laying out of the body), the ekphora (funeral procession), and the interment of the body or cremated remains of the deceased.
Each funerary monument had an inscribed base with an epitaph, often in verse that memorialized the dead. A relief depicting a generalized image of the deceased sometimes evoked aspects of the person’s life, with the addition of a servant, possessions, dog, etc.
The actual funeral consists of three parts: laying out of the body (προθεσις), its conveyance to the place of interment (εκφορα) and finally the deposition of its cremation or inhumed remains. Upon a person’s decease, the eyes and mouth are closed to allow the psyche to leave the body.
