Ancient Greek Creation Story Based on the Hesiod’s Tale In the very beginning, there was no earth, or sea, or sky. There was only a mass of confusion, shapeless and meaningless known as Chaos. Without explanation, Chaos gave birth to Nyx, a goddess of night and all that sleeps, and later to Erebus, a god of darkness and death.
Artifacts found by archaeologists support the creation story recorded in Hesiod’s work; pottery from the eighth century BCE depicts the gods and goddesses he describes. Hesiod told this male-centric version, in which Pandora, the first woman created by the gods, is the cause of much trouble.
Gaea and Uranus. Meanwhile, Gaea gave birth to Uranus, the Starry Sky. Uranus became Gaea's husband, surrounding her from all sides. Together, they produced three sets of children: the three one-eyed Cyclopes, the three Hundred-Handed Hecatoncheires, and the twelve Titans. Who were Zeus’ Lovers? How was the World created?
