The early Greeks personalized every aspect of their world, natural and cultural, and their experiences in it. The earth, the sea, the mountains, the rivers, custom-law ( themis ), and one’s share in society and its goods were all seen in personal as well as naturalistic terms.
The Greeks believed in gods and goddesses who, they thought, had control over every part of people's lives. The Ancient Greeks believed that they had to pray to the gods for help and protection, because if the gods were unhappy with someone, then they would punish them.
25 Απρ 2020 · In this collection of resources, we examine the general features of the Greeks' religion from its main gods and oracles to rituals, sacrifices and priesthoods. We look at some of the famous sacred sites that attracted pilgrims from across Greece such as Delphi and Delos, the use of curses and magic, and the mystery cults such as those at Eleusis.
The religious practices of the Greeks extended beyond mainland Greece, to the islands and coasts of Ionia in Asia Minor, to Magna Graecia (Sicily and southern Italy), and to scattered Greek colonies in the Western Mediterranean, such as Massalia (Marseille).
