23 Οκτ 2020 · These precious pictorial artifacts can tell us much about the culture of ancient Greece. The seven vase paintings collected here provide valuable information on everything from battle techniques to ancient literacy and sexual relationships.
Between the beginning of the sixth and the end of the fourth century B.C., black- and red-figure techniques were used in Athens to decorate fine pottery, while simpler, undecorated wares fulfilled everyday household purposes. With both techniques, the potter first shaped the vessel on a wheel.
One of the most famous vases from the ancient Mediterranean is decorated with a row of soldiers who march confidently across its surface. The vessel was made by a talented artist working in the city of Mycenae, in Greece, sometime between 1200 and 1100 B.C.E.

22 Νοε 2015 · In this balanced design, the Triptolemos painter (an ancient Greek vase painter) creatively separated the crumpled figure of the defeated Persian from his Greek opponent with the device of a shield. Greek Attic, Greece , circa 460 BCE.
The two warriors just described display standard traits of male figures identified as Persians in Attic vase-painting. These are richly patterned long-sleeved and long-legged costumes, headgears with lappets, often shoes with laces, and a certain facial distinctiveness suggested by beards and moustaches.
