The advent of digital humanities now poses the primary historiographical challenge for contemporary and future historians of Islamic art. No longer simply tools to archive and exchange information, digital humanities technologies are evolving into.

In an ideal world, I’d greatly enhance my knowledge of art history’s traditional fields, such as classical art, Byzantine and medieval art, and the art of the Renaissance, recognizing the significant interaction of all those cultures with the Islamic world—yes, even classical art, long antique by the advent of Islam.
My paper examines the shift in the field of “Islamic Art” since the 1970s, from a focus on the “early period” in the “central zone” of the Islamic lands, to a broader chronological and geographical scope.1 This shift has contributed to a notable change of emphasis from artistic unity to variety.
