Mayan Clothing for Women. Mayan clothing for women often included a skirt which was worn with or without a sleeveless, a poncho-like tunic which today is known as “huipil”. The skirts could be either tied with a belt or knotted in place with the “huipil” worn over the skirt.
They have had a very distinct way of wearing clothes and footwear, which were called huipil for women and overshirt for men. Today, traditional Mayan clothing and textiles are seen in the Maya people of Guatemala, Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), Belize, and El Salvador.

Guatemalan Huipils – Handmade Wearable Art and Clothing. Huipil (pronounced wee-peel) is the Spanish word for the traditional blouses worn by Mayan women for many centuries. They are still prominent in Guatemalan and a few other Latin American cultures today.
We work directly with 100 women from 17 weaving co-operations across 6 regions in the western highlands of Guatemala; Sololá, Huehuetenango, Sacatepéquez, Quetzaltenango, Chimaltenango and Quiché. Their locations can be seen on the map below in red, with our coorperation headquaters in Xela marked in blue.
Maya textiles (k’apak) are the clothing and other textile arts of the Maya peoples, indigenous peoples of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Belize. Women have traditionally created textiles in Maya society, and textiles were a significant form of ancient Maya art and religious beliefs.
