Indigena Imports specializes in the finest traditional Maya textiles - all hand-woven, individually produced and previously worn. Our objective is to collect, conserve, exhibit, and sell the best examples available.
We work directly with 100 women from 17 weaving co-operations across 6 regions in the western highlands of Guatemala; Sololá, Huehuetenango, Sacatepéquez, Quetzaltenango, Chimaltenango and Quiché. Their locations can be seen on the map below in red, with our coorperation headquaters in Xela marked in blue.
Mayan Clothing for Women. Mayan clothing for women often included a skirt which was worn with or without a sleeveless, a poncho-like tunic which today is known as “huipil”. The skirts could be either tied with a belt or knotted in place with the “huipil” worn over the skirt.
