Mayan Clothing for Women. Mayan clothing for women often included a skirt which was worn with or without a sleeveless, a poncho-like tunic which today is known as “huipil”. The skirts could be either tied with a belt or knotted in place with the “huipil” worn over the skirt.
Clothing is of great cultural significance to the Mayan, and the huipil is the most prevalent part of a woman’s traditional dress. The weave or design of each huipil can identify her individual personality and the village she is from, as well as her marital, social, wealth, and religious status.
Indigena Imports specializes in the finest traditional Maya textiles - all hand-woven, individually produced and previously worn. Our objective is to collect, conserve, exhibit, and sell the best examples available.
Pronounced wē-pēel, these intricately embroidered blouses are an integral part of traditional Guatemalan women's attire. Paired with woven skirts and fastened with a faja (fah-hah) sash, each Huipil is a masterpiece that weaves together ancient Mayan techniques in weaving, dyeing, and needlework.
