Alternatives to animal testing can be used for toxicological research, such as chemical safety and drug effectiveness testing, or other types of biomedical research that examine biological mechanisms of disease.
Replacing animal tests does not mean putting human patients at risk. It also does not mean halting medical progress. Instead, replacing animals used in testing will improve the quality as well as the humanity of our science. Thankfully, the development of non-animal methods is growing, and fast.
Where a new animal test proves necessary, legislation requires that scientifically-sound approaches to the implementation of the 3Rs – reduction, refinement or replacement of animal use – are used.

It involves four steps: hazard identification, hazard characterisation, exposure assessment and risk characterisation approaches which minimise and refine the use of experimental animals (in-vivo testing) and that promote use of data derived from alternative approaches, where possible.
