Part 1 of the latest Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer was released on October 27, 2022. In addition to providing rates of new cases and deaths for the most common cancers in the United States, this year’s report also examines trends in pancreatic cancer and its subtypes in detail. U.S. Cancer Statistics includes 1,777,566 new cases of invasive cancer occurring in 2021. In the United States in 2021, 272,454 new breast cancers were reported in females.
Approximately 608,570 Americans are expected to die of cancer in 2021 (Table 1), which translates to about 1,670 deaths per day. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. Table 3 provides estimated cancer deaths by state in 2021. The Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer has statistics on cancer deaths and new cases (incidence). The report includes long-term trends (since 2001) and short-term trends with the most recent five years of data (2014-2018 for incidence and 2015-2019 for mortality).
