The pancreas develops from ventral and dorsal buds (anlage) each with its own duct originating from the primitive intestine, which at a later stage develops into the second, or descending, portion of the duodenum. 1. Annular pancreas is a congenital anomaly whereby pancreatic tissue encircles the duodenum. Current knowledge of endoscopic findings of annular pancreas is limited to small case series. The aim of this study was to describe the endoscopic and pancreatographic findings of patients with annular pancreas at a large tertiary care ERCP center.
An annular pancreas, initially described by Tiedmann in 1818, is a rare congenital pancreatic anomaly. This malformation results from a failure of the pancreatic ventral anlage to rotate clockwise with the duodenum during the 7th week of gestation.
