18 Μαΐ 2023 · In a contraction, an apostrophe represents missing letters. The most common contractions are made up of verbs, auxiliaries, or modals attached to other words: “He would” = “He’d.” “I have” = “I’ve.” “They are” = “They’re.” “You cannot” = “You can’t.”.
Mastering apostrophes is important because your readers will be highly unimpressed with wrongly placed ones. Apostrophes are used to show possession (e.g., dog's dinner), in time expressions (e.g., 2 years' pay), in contractions (e.g., isn't) and, on rare occasions, to show plurals (Z's and 2's).
When we show who owns something or has a close relationship with something, we use an apostrophe + s after the name or the noun. When the noun is plural, we put the apostrophe after the s: Is that Frank’s camera? There was a big teachers’ conference last week in Mexico City. (a conference for teachers)
