15 Αυγ 2023 · When a baby is head down, face down, the medical term for it is the cephalic occiput anterior position. This the most common position for a baby to be born in. With the face down and turned slightly to the side, the smallest part of the baby's head leads the way through the birth canal.
Occiput anterior is usually the easiest position for the fetal head to traverse the maternal pelvis. Shown here is the "direct OA" position. While some fetuses deliver in this position, others deliver slightly rotated clockwise (LOA) or counterclockwise (ROA).
Normally, the presentation is vertex (head first), and the position is occiput anterior (facing toward the pregnant person's spine) and with the face and body angled to one side and the neck flexed. Variations in fetal presentations include face, brow, breech, and shoulder.
