What is an anterior fetal presentation? The baby’s back is towards the center of the abdomen. Baby’s hands are hidden near the spine of their pregnant parent. The bottom circle shows the direct occiput anterior baby.
15 Αυγ 2023 · When a baby is head down, face down, the medical term for it is the cephalic occiput anterior position. This the most common position for a baby to be born in. With the face down and turned slightly to the side, the smallest part of the baby's head leads the way through the birth canal.
Occiput anterior is usually the easiest position for the fetal head to traverse the maternal pelvis. Shown here is the "direct OA" position. While some fetuses deliver in this position, others deliver slightly rotated clockwise (LOA) or counterclockwise (ROA).
Positions and directionals: Anterior: At or near the front of the body. Posterior: At or near the back of the body. Midline: Imaginary vertical line dividing the body equally. Superior: Toward the head, upper part of a structure. Inferior: Away from the head, lower part of a structure. Lateral: Farther from midline. Medial: Nearer to midline.
For a vaginal birth, your baby will ideally be headfirst with the back of their head at the front of your belly, also known as being in the anterior position. This position is best for labour and birth since it means that the smallest part of your baby’s head goes down the birth canal first.
