The Battle of Anzio was a battle of the Italian Campaign of World War II that commenced January 22, 1944. The battle began with the Allied amphibious landing known as Operation Shingle, and ended on June 4, 1944, with the liberation of Rome.
The regiment including the 100th Infantry Battalion is best known as the most decorated in U.S. military history, [4] and as a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei) who fought in World War II.

Compared to the veteran troops holding the Gustav Line, the German Fourteenth Army at Anzio comprised mostly inexperienced or hastily thrown together units taken from garrison duties elsewhere. Their casualties were estimated at 27,500, of whom 5,500 were killed, 17,500 wounded and 4,500 captured.
