An aphthous ulcer is the most common ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa, and presents as a painful punched-out sore on oral or genital mucous membranes. They are also called aphthae, aphthosis, aphthous stomatitis and canker sores.

Aphthous ulcers, also known as canker sores, are shallow, painful ulcers that appear on the inside of the mouth, usually on the cheeks, lips, or tongue. They are not contagious and are often triggered by factors like stress, injury, or certain foods.
Major aphthous ulcers are usually larger and deeper and can be extremely painful. They may take up to six weeks to heal and may scar. Herpetiform aphthous ulcers are pinpoint in size and occur in clusters of 10 to 100. These are uncommon and usually, heal without scaring within a month.
