This paper presents selected results from a large-scale empirical study of evaluation in the language of English linguistic book reviews. In this study, evaluation is provisionally defined in a very broad sense, largely in line with Thompson and Hunston's (2000: 5) definition, as the expression of what a speaker or writer thinks of what s/he talks or writes about.
Subsumed under Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) that emphasizes functionality of language in social contexts, Appraisal is a recent theoretical framework that extends the interpersonal dialogistic semantics dimension of SFL into interesting elaboration.
